Hey! Just got around to listening to this episode! Thanks for keeping me company in the small hours.
I was just wonder re: red truck … could it be a reference from the hallmark type movie “Christmas in Evergreen” from 2017? I am probably totally wrong on this but if they have only been around for 2 years or so it might fit?! But maybe I am just sleep deprived and slightly crazy.
Thanks for all the work you do! I do enjoy your show!
Oh, man…”Melekalikimaka” by The Beach Boys, aka “Kona Christmas.” That was from their unreleased 1977 called Merry Christmas From the Beach Boys. (Some of the less-bad songs from that project were released in September 1998 on an album called Ultimate Christmas, which also includes the entirety of The Beach Boys’ 1964 Christmas album.) Their label at the time, Warner Bros., quickly rejected it. It was recorded concurrently with their last album for Warner Bros before leaving for CBS Records, MIU Album, which is basically the Christmas album but NOT Christmas-based. For example, “Melekalikimaka” is called “Kona Coast.” MIU Album, so-called because most of it was recorded at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, is generally regarded as one of the Beach Boys’ worst albums — indeed, listen to “Hey Little Tomboy” and try not to cringe; seriously, Brian Wilson should have had to register as a sex offender over that.
I remember the first time I heard “Melekalikimaka.” It was on a road trip with my then-girlfriend (now wife!), moving my stuff to her apartment in New Jersey from outside of Chicago. She had a copy of Ultimate Christmas — again, it was released in September 1998, but very few stores actually put it out on the floor that early, but there’s a store in Jersey (still going strong!) owned by a Beach Boys fan and he had the CD out the day it was released, so we were listening to it as we were driving through the mountains in Pennsylvania. Thank GOD my wife was the one driving at the time because when I heard that cringeworthy Mike Love lyric “‘Melekalikimaka’ is ‘merry Christmas’ in Hawaii talk-a” (nice one, Mike), I laughed so hard and loud at it with tears streaming down my face…good lord, how bad could it get!

I took a break from listening for a time due to reasons and I’m so glad this was the first one I listened to after coming back. I’m glad to see you and the various imaginary listeners are still at it, Tim.
