    Fruitcake must have been reviled in the 1950s too though because there was a Christmas episode of The Donna Reed Show (which aired in the late 50s/early 60s) in which Donna was giving out wrapped gifts. The receivers said excitedly “Oh!” Then she told them “It’s a fruitcake!” And they then said unenthusiastically “Oh.”
