  1. Benjamin says:

I know the Christmas Bowl is based on the votes of the people, but here are my arguments against both pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes. And remember these both come from a carb-loving, Idaho blooded November boy who loves both of these items.

Pumpkin pie – Is a November / Thanksgiving treat. Unless Black Friday falls on December 1st, I don’t see this “berry” pie in the twelfth month.

Mashed Potatoes – This fluffy dish and its other spud-based derivative friends are pretty much the base of American culture, and thus enjoyed the whole year. Yes, I have MP for the Thankful meal and the Yuletide meal, but it’s always just kind of there. Not a star player, no matter how amazing. Also, my wife makes them in the Instant pot then mixes in some cream cheese!

All this to say that while I do love the other two, in my humble opinion, Hot Chocolate is the most Christmassy of the foods. There is nothing like coming home from a sleigh ride, the sledding hill, or caroling than a fresh cup of Hot Chocolate to warm the spirits. In addition, if you really want to up your Hot Chocolate game you need to try an Australian “Tim Tam Slam.” A Tim Tam is a chocolate-coated wafer cookie. You bite off the top and bottom, and then use it as a straw to drink the hot chocolate. You can also use a Twix bar. The trick is to do it all in one “slam.” It is life-changing. • Lizzie says:

Agreed, Benjamin. At first glance I was like, oh, mashed potatoes, because it’s one of my favorite foods. But then thinking about specifically CHRISTMASSY, yeah, it’s gotta be the hot chocolate!

    • Timothy B says:

I am right there with you. I can get mashed potatoes anytime of the year. Hot chocolate all the way! (Now if it was pecan pie that would be a different story!)

  2. Benjamin says:

Another Patrick Stewart Christmas Movie I found this year on the Streams is called Christmas Eve (https://www.livingscriptures.com/christmas-movies/). Lots of fun and multiple Linus moments. This film also has connections to MyMerryChristmas.com (great shout out to my favorite Utah-based Christmas podcast)

  3. Jennifer Lundgren says:

Patrick Stewart did a movie version of the Christmas Carol a few years (decades?) back. It is one of our favorites along with George C Scott and Alistair Sim. Now THAT would be a great “who did it best” line up…….I think chilled pumpkin pie is a southern thing. Regarding turkey: my former brother in law used to buy an extra turkey when they went on sale and kept it in a freezer in the garage for that 5th week of the month that occasionally occurs or an extra celebration like a birthday, special event, etc.

  4. Brian Pierce says:

I think there may have been confusion in the voting – it seems like people voted for the BEST food instead of the MOST CHRISTMASSY foods? I mean, c’mon… MASHED POTATOES?!? They’re about as Christmassy as The Gift of Grey Socks! Comfy, useful, practical… but FOR CHRISTMAS??? And the Pumpkin Pie… haven’t we taken enough away from The Thanksgiving People? We already stole Jingle Bells from them, let them have their pie. The only Christmassy food left on this list is HOT COCOA. I know it, you know it, all the listeners know it. Do the right thing. Vote Hot Cocoa.

  5. Art says:

Yes we should do a “Who Did It Best” Scrooge contest! there are plenty of actors who have played Scrooge over the years this would be amazing.

And thanks for the link to the BBC4 special about Dickens. I can’t wait to watch that!

  6. Marcia Poppins says:

My incredibly cute grandsons agree with the others that Hot Chocolate is the most Christmasy and they would like their Daddy and Mommy to have some for them–and include a candy cane, whipped cream, marshmallows, and SPRINKLES. They can’t wait for your next episode, which they think is going to be on the 15th.

  7. Timothy B says:

I am going to agree and place my vote for Hot cocoa. We alway have Hot cocoa on Christmas eve served in a santa mug! What could be better. Pumpkin Pie = Thanksgiving, Mashed Potatoes = Thursday dinner

  8. Steve says:

Oh my you have changed my mind true I eat pumpkin pie on Christmas but its definitely a Thanksgiving pie. And mashed potato is a year round side dish so even though I like both of them more then hot chocolate I’m changing my vote
