The best “hack” I learned was from a woman who always decorated our office tree beautifully. We use an artificial tree (real tress break me out in a rash), and as we put up the tree I wrap the trunk in metallic/reflective fabric (the kind used for wreaths is great). I’ve used it to make small, cheap, threadbare trees look amazing (fluff that out with the branches and fill it with dollar store flowers in the right colors), and still use it to hide the pole and provide beautiful back lighting now that I can afford a nice big tree. It also enables you to tuck things into it with a bit more stability (some of the Hallmark ornaments are a bit heavy, so they need to be put back in the branches, but you can “frame” them).

Last year I discovered that you can buy a tree extender (I didn’t know this was a thing), and it’s a pretty inexpensive way to make your tree bigger (and to have more room for the mountain of gifts the grandparents send to our house!).

Trying to have a more sustainable Christmas I’ve been using up my backlog of holiday paper, and trying to decorate gifts with reusable items. A great way to help little kids hand out gifts is to pick a theme or a paper for each person–all of my son’s gifts have a felt stocking on the front–then his baby cousin doesn’t have to be able to read his name to be able to hand out his gifts. I keep a basket for the decorations on the coffee table–but I still have to remind everyone not to throw them away!
